Wat is IFS?

"My mind knows I'm safe... so why doesn't my body?"

Logically, you know there's no reason to worry.

Yet your body feels tense. Your heart starts racing. Your breathing becomes shallow. Your thoughts speed up, and no matter how much you tell yourself to calm down, your body doesn't seem to listen.

Maybe this feels familiar...

  • You carry tension in your shoulders, jaw, chest, or stomach.

  • You feel "on" all the time.

  • You overthink situations long after they've happened.

  • You startle easily or feel overwhelmed by small things.

  • You know logically you're safe, but your body reacts as if you're not.

  • You often feel anxious without knowing exactly why.

You aren't making it up.

And you're not "too sensitive."

When your nervous system has learned to stay alert because of stress, trauma, or difficult experiences, it can continue reacting long after the danger has passed.

You can't think your way out of what your nervous system is holding onto.

Your body needs more than reassurance. It needs an experience of safety.

WHAT IS SOMATIC THERAPY?

Somatic therapy, also known as body-based therapy, helps you reconnect with your body and the signals your nervous system has been trying to send you.

Instead of only talking about your thoughts and emotions, we also explore what's happening in your body.

Where do you hold tension?

What happens in your body when you feel anxious or overwhelmed?

What might your body be trying to tell you?

Sometimes your rational mind knows there's no real danger, yet your body reacts as if there is. Your heart starts racing, your breathing becomes shallow, your shoulders tighten, or you feel a knot in your stomach. No matter how well you understand what's happening, you can't always think yourself into feeling calm.

Using principles from Somatic Experiencing®, polyvagal theory, and nervous system regulation, we gently explore how stress, trauma, and past experiences can become stored in the body. Sometimes your nervous system continues to respond to present-day situations as though they're old threats, even when they no longer reflect what's happening here and now.

As trauma expert Bessel van der Kolk writes in The Body Keeps the Score, "the body keeps the score." Our bodies often remember what our minds have learned to move past.

By bringing awareness to your body's sensations, emotions, breathing, and nervous system responses, somatic therapy helps create a greater sense of safety, regulation, and connection with yourself.
